Bissy — Cola acuminata, the Kola Nut — is one of the most culturally significant plants in West African history and one of the most important herbs in African traditional medicine. Used for over 1,000 years across West and Central Africa in ceremony, trade, diplomacy, and medicine, Kola Nut was the sacred hospitality offering across cultures from Nigeria to Ghana to Sierra Leone. It is also the plant that originally gave Coca-Cola its name and a significant portion of its original formula.

In Igbo culture of Nigeria, Kola Nut is called "the king of fruits" and is present at every major life ceremony — births, marriages, funerals, and diplomatic meetings. Traditional Yoruba and Hausa healers have used it medicinally for generations. In Jamaica and the Caribbean it is known as Bissy and used as a traditional remedy for poisoning and as a general tonic herb.

I bought these for the cultural connection more than anything, since kola nut has been central to West African traditions for over a thousand years. The nuts arrived firm and fresh, and chewing a piece gives that distinct bitter bite I remember from my grandmother's stories.

I've been chewing a small piece each morning and the taste is exactly that bitter, earthy kola bite I remember from back home. The nuts arrived whole and firm with no mold or dryness, which matters since I use them for traditional medicine prep. Genuinely glad I found a source that respects the real

I was struck by the deep cultural history behind these nuts—knowing they've been used in West African traditions for over a thousand years makes using them feel truly special. They've become a staple in my herbal routine.
